Director-Common Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Babar stated Monday that the military is subservient to the federal government: “It does not need to get involved in politics, nor should it be dragged into it”.

Throughout a Q&A session with contributors of a wide-ranging briefing to the press, the DG ISPR stated that there was no backdoor contact with Opposition events as is being speculated within the media. 

“Absolutely not,” he stated. 

Maj Gen Iftikhar additional stated that the criticism levelled by the Opposition events in opposition to the navy was “baseless” and that the federal government had given an appropriate response to these statements.

“The military is doing its job despite all that is being said about it,” he stated. “Our concern [regarding the targeting of the armed forces] is separate.” 

“The government of that time had asked the army to conduct the elections and the military followed their orders with honesty and to the best of its ability,” he stated, clarifying that there had been no rigging within the 2018 elections.

“Even if they [the opposition parties] have doubts about it [the result of the election], they can approach the respective institutions,” he urged.

“To level allegations is not right. The army is subservient to the government and the government has responded to these allegations in a better way.” 

‘We’ll serve them tea’

Requested what the military thinks of the Pakistan Democratic Motion’s Maulana Fazlur Rahman saying that he’ll march to Rawalpindi, Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar stated he doesn’t see any cause for the PDM to move to Rawalpindi. 

“If it all they want to come, we will take care of them. Serve them tea [chai paani]. What more can I say,” he quipped because the mediapersons current broke into smiles. 

When requested if there can be any motion taken in opposition to these smearing the military, the ISPR chief stated the military is solely doing its job and can reply to criticism solely when it’s felt that’s primarily based on details or holds some weight. 

“We our pre-occupied and do not want to get involved in such things nor will we. We have stayed the course [and] we will stay the course.”
